EDUC 586 Literacy in the Secondary School Smore Brochure

INTRODUCTION:

During the Spring of 2015, I took a class titled Educ 586: Literacy in the Secondary School. We were asked to create an online brochure using the program Smore. We were given a choice on what our Smore brochure would include, and I decided to connect my brochure to the class text: Do I Really Have to Teach Reading? by Cris Tovani. Tovani's text was a wonderful read, with many, many take-aways. I, however, enjoyed her writings on Text Sets. The following artifact details Tovani's explanation of a Text Set, and how teachers of all subjects and grades can teach using Text Sets.

REFLECTION:

I enjoyed this lesson for various reasons. First, I liked that we were introduced to Smore, as this online brochure was something I've never heard about before. I also enjoyed that we were given a choice on our brochure topic. I feel that although text sets can seem overwhelming, they can be an incredible resource! Once a text set has been created, it can be used year after year. I also liked sharing my brochure with non-elementary teachers; text sets are very common at the primary/intermediate grade levels, and it was interesting to share the notion of text sets with the upper grade educators.
