Literacy Night

INTRODUCTION

My beloved school, East Elementary in Baraboo, WI, hosts Literacy Night each year. Students and their families are welcomed to come and join in some reading and writing fun! This year we had three stations at our Literacy Night: "make a book", "take a book" and "read a book", and students were given the opportunity to go to whichever stations they wanted. Fun craft paper, sequins, stickers, yarn, ribbon and paper were provided to students so they could make a book. At the "take a book" station, students were allowed to pick any book they wanted and take it home with them (I even took one too: Freckle Juice by Judy Blume!). Finally, students and their parents got comfortable and cozy in our new library while they took part in the "read a book" station.

REFLECTION

I had a blast at Literacy Night! I was so happy to see one of my students, an ELL student, there reading and writing with his mom and sisters; our ELL teacher was also there to accommodate our Spanish speaking families who wanted to take part in Literacy Night. Each station seemed to grab hold of the kids' attention, and there were so many smiling faces. Our Reading Specialists felt that this was the most successful Literacy Night due to the fact that the kids had the choice to flow from station to station at their leisure.
